In the late 1960’s Alf Barry, a descendant of the original Joseph Barry, moved to the Witsands and established a small hotel on the land he had inherited, overlooking the Breede River. He constructed a small-craft harbour below the high water mark and called his establishment "Lucky Strike Botel" that was the forerunner of the Breede River Lodge today. The hotel endeavors to cater both for the local family traveler and the international traveler who would like to see a part of the real South Africa. The Breede River, which is the largest river in South Africa with the longest estuary of 50 kilometers, empties into San Sebastian Bay, which is home to the largest whale sanctuary in the Southern hemisphere. Additionally it is renowned for its excellent river and sea fishing. Situated amongst some of the richest historical areas of the Cape of Good Hope and the Southern Cape coastal regions, the lodge offers both hotel accommodation of the highest standard through to family oriented independent holiday units.
