Chelaya is a versatile lodge situated on a large property between Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay. It is ideally positioned to give guests access to all the exciting activities and sites to be seen and experienced in the area.

The old family farmhouse is tastefully decorated with some quirky corners giving it a warm and welcoming atmosphere with its Oregon pine floors and beams. The spacious, leafy gardens, numerous fish ponds and dams allow one to relax and enjoy nature.

A Bit of Background: Mike and Harriet Joao bought the farm in 1997 and for the next 13 years it was inhabited by their four spunky daughters. It was when the last of their crazy bunch left home, that they heard the silence and realised the old house needed to be filled with laughter again. Mike, being a builder by trade, quickly made the changes needed, Harriet did the decor and Chelaya Country Lodge was born.

The family feel is prevalent throughout the house with photographs, antique furniture handed down through the ages, and souvenirs collected on happy holidays across the world. Oregon floors, yellow wood beams, and the most unusual wall decorations set the tone for a relaxed but stylish holiday venue. In keeping with the family feel, each bedroom is named after one of the four daughters. All the bedrooms have queen-sized beds and each bathroom is unique.

Inside the house the lounge area, is a huge fireplace for the cold winter evenings, a library with writing desk; a well stocked pub with corner fireplace and TV nook, and a spacious farm style kitchen. The bar is staffed during the day but becomes an honesty bar in the later hours. Light meals, picnics and poolside snacks are available throughout the day. A well trained and friendly group of staff are there to make up and turn down the rooms, do the washing up, clean the house, light the fires and to make sure you have everything you require.

In the garden are discreet staff to maintain the pool and ensure umbrellas, towels and loungers are provided when the sun is shining. Chelaya offers first class English and Continental breakfasts as well as the opportunity to choose between a light lunch prepared for you or doing your own thing in the spacious farm kitchen.
