Sherwood's Country House

THINGS TO DO & SEE AT SHERWOOD’S & SURROUNDS

There are several short scenic walks from the country house including:-

* A walk to King’s Walden garden .You may either walk from Sherwood’s or take a short drive to the entrance and then spend a good few hours strolling and admiring the spectacular views through the formal garden which forms part of the ‘botanical route’ in the area.

* A ‘bird walk’ through cultured and indigenous forest around the dam at Sherwood’s.

* An ‘evening stroll’ around our main house , for a breathtaking country view of the milky way.

Birdying enthusiasts will hopefully be able to see a large variety including ‘Giant, Pied Pigmy Woodland & Malachite Kingfishers, Purple Crested Loerie, several types of Woodpecker, Sunbirds, Oriole and even Raptors including Giant Eagle Owl, Wood Owl, Martial Eagle, Black Eagle and several Kestrels and Hawks. Rare species, the Bathawk.

Small game in the area include Bushpig, Bushbuck, Porcupine, Meerkat, Civet, Spotted Genet, Vervet Monkeys, a rare sighting of two Samango Monkeys and perhaps you may hear the bark of Charma Baboon close by.

The Rooikat Hiking Trail is 1.5 km from Sherwood’s(Sherwood’s to New Agatha Forestry Station ).This 4 hour hike takes in both cultivated and indigenous forests in a mountain setting and ends on the bottom of the valley where you find a beautiful stretch of ‘Bob’s River’.

FROM (JOHANNESBURG )O R TAMBO AIRPORT TAKE N1 TO PRETORIA - 45 MINUTES.
FROM PRETORIA ON THE N1 CONTINUE IN THE POLOKWANE DIRECTION - 3 HOURS TO POLOKWANE
JUST BEFORE POLOKWANE CENTRAL TAKE THE RIGHT TURN OFF R71 TO TZANEEN.
CONTINUE ON THE R71, PASS THE UNIVERSITY OF THE NORTH ON YOUR LEFT AND PASS THE ZCC MORIA CHURCH & VILLAGE ON YOUR RIGHT TO HAENERTSBURG (STAY ON THE R71 AT ALL TIMES) – 45 MINUTES .
PASS HAENERTSBURG ON YOUR RIGHT,STILL CONTINUE ON THE R71 THROUGH MAGOEBASKLOOF PASS - 38 KM.
ARRIVE AT A T-JUNCTION TURN RIGHT ONTO THE R36.
CONTINUE ON THE R36 IN THE DIRECTION TO LYDENBURG/TZANEEN SOUTH,UNTIL YOU ARRIVE AT A THREE WAY STOP - 10KM.
TURN RIGHT AT THE THREE WAY STOP INTO AGATHA MOUNTAIN.
TRAVEL 11KM UP THE MOUNTAIN TO ANOTHER T-JUNCTION.
AT THE T-JUNCTION TURN LEFT ,TRAVEL 2 KM TO SHERWOOD’S COUNTRY HOUSE WHICH YOU WILL FIND OUR GREEN GATES ON YOUR LEFT HAND SIDE – PLEASE DRIVE IN.

From Phalaborwa

DIRECTIONS FROM PHALABORWA TO SHERWOOD’S COUNTRY HOUSE – TZANEEN

TAKE R71 TO GRAVELLOTTE 60KM .AT GRAVELLOTTE T-JUNCTION TURN RIGHT TOWARDS TZANEEN WHICH IS THE R71 – 55 KM.
WHEN ENTERING TZANEEN ,YOU WILL GET TO A 4 WAY STOP ,CONTINUE +/-3 KM , TAKE THE NEXT TURNOFF ON YOUR LEFT ONTO THE R36 TO TZANEEN.
AT THE FIRST 3 WAY STOP TURN RIGHT INTO AGATHA ,TRAVEL 11 KM TO A T-JUNCTION TURN LEFT ,TRAVEL 2 KM UNTIL SHERWOOD’S COUNTRY HOUSE WHICH YOU WILL FIND ON YOUR LEFT.
