The Addo National Elephant Park, established in 1931, covers an area of 1,640 square kilometres near to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province. The park is home to 450 elephants and many other animals such as rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, all within their natural habitat. It is also home to the largest remaining population of the flightless dung beetle.
The Addo's main entrance leads to two looped tourist roads that are tarred, with many gravel off-shoots. There is also an access road through the southern section of the park that forks off the N2 highway near Colchester and joins up with the existing tourist roads in the park.
The Addo Elephant Park already extends as far as the Zuurberg mountains in the north, but there are currently negotiations to extend the park by another 1,960 square kilometres, to cover a total area 3 600 square kilometres.
