Amanzimtoti is a small coastal town in KwaZulu Natal, just south of Durban. The name originates from a remark made by the Zulu King Shaka, when he led his army down the south coast to rest on the banks of the local river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed "Kanti amanzi mtoti", meaning "So, the water is sweet". KING SHAKA DID NOT FIND THE WATER SWEET AS IN SUGARY BUT MEANT IT WAS NICE TASTY OR PLEASANT. HOWEVER, HE COULD NOT USE THE NAME FOR TASTY BEING "MNANDI" AS HIS MOTHER'S NAME WAS "NANDI" AND HE WAS, BY CUSTOM, FORBIDDEN TO EVEN PHONETICALLY PRONOUNCE HIS PARENT'S NAME. THEREFORE THE USE OF AN ALTERNATIVE WORD "MTOTI" TO EXPRESS HIS APPRECIATION FOR THE WATER. The name stuck as Amanzimtoti, or "Sweet waters", but locals frequently shorten the name simply to "Toti".
Amanzimtoti is known for its beaches and warm weather. It is a popular tourist destination, particularly amongst surfers. The annual "sardine run" is also a main event here.
