The town of Colesberg is located on the main road from Cape Town to Johannesburg. It is a sheep-farming area of over 500,000 hectares in the Northern Cape province and breeds many of the country's top merinos. It is also renowned for producing high-quality racehorses and many stud farms are nearby, including one owned by legendary golfer, Gary Player.
The town was founded in 1830 on an abandoned station of the London Missionary Society. It was named after Sir Galbriath Lowry Cole, then Governor of the Cape Colony. The town still boasts many buildings that were built in a blend of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture with ceilings of reed and yellowwood timbers.
Colesberg saw a number of battles and skirmishes during the second Anglo-Boer War and the Colesberg Garden of Remembrance, located just outside the town, is definitely worth a visit. The Doornkloof Nature Reserve, located on the confluence of the Organe and Seekoei Rivers, is also nearby.
