Durban is known for its subtropical climate, sandy beaches, warm ocean currents and unspoilt game reserves. The region is a major tourist destination. Apart from tourism, this coastal belt also sustains the vast cane plantations that produce most of South Africa's sugar.
Durban is the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the third most populated city in South Africa with 3.5 million inhabitants, although the city's density is relatively low. Durban has the biggest port in Africa and is perfectly situated to explore the scenic and varied coastline. It is one of the few natural harbours between Port Elizabeth and Maputo.
Durban is characterized by a mild subtropical climate with warm, wet summers & mild moist to dry winters, which are frost free. Durban has an annual rainfall of over 1,000 mm and an average annual temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, with daytime temperatures peaking at 28 degrees Celsius.
Over 60% of the city's population speak Zulu as a first language, although English and other official South African languages are also widely spoken. Almost 30% of the city is currently unemployed.
