Cape Town accommodation.
Durbanville is a residential suburb and wine producing region in the northern suburbs of Cape Town. Originally known as Pampoenkraal (from the Dutch "pampoen" meaning pumpkin and "kraal" meaning an enclosure for livestock), Durbanville was founded in 1806 as a watering station. In 1834, the name was changed to “d'Urban” in honour of the Cape governor, Benjamin d'Urban, but later this was changed again to Durbanville, in order to avoid confusion with Durban in KwaZulu Natal.
Durbanville has a beautiful wine route, which is one of its biggest tourist attractions. Because of the local soil's high clay content, it is particularly suited for Sauvignon Blanc. The route includes wine cellars such as Altydgedacht, Bloemendal, D'Aria (Poplars), De Grendel, Diemersdal, Durbanville Hills, Hillcrest, Nitida and Meerendal.
