Cape Town accommodation.
Fish Hoek, or Vishoek in Afrikaans, is a small coastal village nestled in a valley at the mouth of the Silvermine River on the False Bay. The town is on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula, only 35km from central Cape Town. The journey between here and the Cape Town CBD can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the traffic, but the drive is so scenic that the time will fly by. Fish Hoek is a definite must-see spot on your way through to Cape Point.
Fish Hoek appears on the earliest maps of the Cape, dating back to the 1700's, as Vissers Baai or Visch Hoek. At the time, farmers from nearby Noordhoek used Fish Hoek beach for whaling and fishing, but it was not until 1918 that the town itself was established.
Today, Fish Hoek is regarded as a suburb of greater Cape Town and lies on the railway line from the City Bowl to Simon's Town further south. Fish Hoek is known for being a "dry" area - one of the conditions placed by the owner who gave the land for development was that there be no alcohol sold here. Nowadays alcohol is available in restaurants and bars, but there are still no bottle stores.
The mountains nearby have large numbers of complex caves in Table Mountain sandstone, but Fish Hoek is best known for its long beach which is great for swimming and fishing. The broad stretch of Fish Hoek Beach is lined with changing rooms, cafes and a yacht club. Fish Hoek has a balmy Mediterranean climate and hot summer days are cooled by frequent visits of the south-easterly winds known locally as "the Cape Doctor".
