Franshoek from the pass 1
Franschhoek (Dutch for French Corner), is a small town in the Western Cape Province. Once a sleepy country retreat, Franschhoek began experiencing a boom in the 1990's as property prices increased and it became a highly exclusive getaway. Franschhoek is now one of the most sought after addresses in South Africa, due to its convenient proximity to Cape Town, ideal summer weather, snowy winter peaks in winter and the simple beauty of the surrounding region.
Franschoek is known for the top restaurants and boutiques that lie within its quiet borders. Coupled with a strong local wine culture, many people describe Franschhoek as the "food & wine" capital of South Africa.
The valley between the the Franschhoek and Dranekstein mountains was originally settled in 1688 by French Huguenot refugees and was initially called "Olifantshoek" (Elephant's corner) due to the vast herds of elephants that used to roam the area. The well established wine-farms that this scenic valley is known for were originally granted to several French Huguenot families in 1694 by the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC).
The heritage of this town is preserved today by the town’s natural architectural beauty and the French Huguenot Memorial standing at the top of the village. The museum tells the story of the history of the first settlers, with each Huguenot farm having its own fascinating tale.
