Gordon's Bay is in the northeastern corner of False Bay, about 50km away from Cape Town. This harbour town is named after Robert Jacob Gordon, a Dutch explorer of Scottish descent. Gordon's Bay is the smallest of three towns in the Helderberg region and was originally called Fish Hoek many years before the town of the same name, located on the western side of False Bay, was founded. The old name can still be seen on the outside wall of the local Post Office.
Gordon's Bay can be broken up into three main areas. Firstly there is an old village situated near the old harbour and Bikini Beach, secondly the mountainside on the lower slopes of the Hottentots-Holland mountains overlooking False Bay, and thirdly the low-lying suburbs close to the main beach making up the most recent expansion of the town. The oldest side of the town is home to the South African Navy's Naval College, an officer training centre located adjacent to the old harbour and yacht marina.
