Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam and is situated in the Eastern Cape province. Although it was founded by the VOC (Dutch East Indian Company) in 1786, the name was chosen by the then governor of the Cape Colony, Cornelis Jacob van de Graaff and his wife whose maiden name was "Raynet".
Today, Graaff-Reinet has a population of over 80,000 people and is a flourishing market for agricultural produce. The district is noted for its mohair industry, sheep and ostrich farming.
