Hermanus is situated on the southern coast of the Western Cape, along Walker Bay and has become famous for the local whale watching during winter and spring. Originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, Hermanus was originally established as a farming community by Hermanus Pieters. In more recent years, however, the town became a fashionable holiday and retirement destination, as it is only 115km from Cape Town.
Towards the end of September, Hermanus hosts the annual Whale Festival. At this time of the year Southern Wright Whales flock to the bay for mating season. The festival is characterized by food and craft stalls, a festive atmosphere, and incredible whale sightings.
Hermanus has some lovely beaches, including the popular Grotto Beach. Grotto is the largest beach in Hermanus and is an accredited "Blue Flag" beach, which ensures its preservation as a World Heritage Site. Other popular beaches include Voelklip, Onrus, Kammabaai and Langbaai.
