Hoedspruit (meaning "hat creek") is situated in the Limpopo province, at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg Mountains on the old Selati railway line from Phalaborwa to Kaapmuiden. The town is small, but has grown in recent years due to private game reserves along the west of the Kurger National Park.
