Howick

+10

Description

The town of Howick, KwaZulu Natal, was founded in 1850 by the Wesleyan Missionary James Archbell, who derived its name from the ancestral home of Howick Hall in Northumberland, England. The region of Howick enjoys warm summers and cool winters that can have a snappy chill when snow falls on the nearby Drakensberg.

The town is home to the popular Howick Falls, an 85m waterfall near the mouth of the Umgeni River. Several other waterfalls in the vicinity are also worth a visit, including the Cascade Falls (25m), Shelter Falls (27m) and Karkloof Falls (105m).

In December 1996 Nelson Mandela was awarded the Freedom of Howick, where he was arrested years earlier.
