King William's Town (known to locals simply as 'King') is an agricultural district at the foot of the Amatola mountains. The town was founded by Sir Benjamin d'Urban in May 1835 during the Xhosa War, and was later named after King William IV. King William's Town is situated in the Eastern Cape province, only a 40 minutes drive from East London.
King William's Town manufactures sweets, jams, candles, soaps, and matches. The town also has a thriving trade of leather, wool, hides and grains done with East London. The local Amatola Museum is home to "Huberta", one of the longest travelling hippo's in South Africa.
