Lagoon View From Leisure Islan
Knysna is situated on the world-renowned Garden Route in the Western Cape. The town is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm water lagoon, fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands, known as the Knysna Heads. Temperate rainforests cover the hilly terrain surrounding Knysna for 20km until it changes to fynbos high up in the Outeniqua Mountains.
Situated between George and Plettenberg Bay, Knysna has a year-round warm climate. Knysna grew up around its port which could provide shelter for up to 50 ships. The region is well forested and an abundance of timber was exported from the area. The port no longer operates and was officially closed in 1954, but many water-sports (motorised and unmotorised) still thrive here today.
Knysna has recently become very popular among golfers due to the world class golf courses surrounding it, including Pezula Golf Course, Simola Golf Course & the well established Knysna Golf Course alongside the lagoon.
