The Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and covers an area of 18,989 square kilometres. It extends 350km from west to south and 60km from east to west. To the west and south of the reserve are the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, to the north is Zimbabwe and to the east is Mozambique. It is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Mozambique.
The reserve is home to a multitude of game, including the much sought after Big 5 - Leopard, Lion, Elephant, Black Rhino and Buffalo. In fact, the Kruger has more species of animals that any other African Game Reserve. Other animals that can be spotted here include African Hunting Dogs, White Rhino, Zebras, Bushbuck, Cheetah, Eland, Giraffes, Kudu, Spotted Hyenas, Waterbuck, Hippos and Impala. There are also over 517 bird species in the reserve.
The park is part of Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area designated by the United Nations Education and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve. The climate in the Lowveld is subtropical with hot and humid summer days. The rainy season is from September until May. The dry winter season is the ideal time to visit the Park as animals are easily spotted.
The Kruger park has 8 main gates that allow access to tourists. The gates are named Paul Kruger, Numbi, Malelane, Crocodile Bridge, Punda Maria, Orpen, Phabeni, Phalaborwa and Pafuri.
