Winter in Johannesburg
Krugersdorp is a mining city in the West Rand of the Gauteng province with a population of over 400,000. The city was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius and named after Paul Kruger.
The city is best known for gold-mining, but manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are also mined in the area. It was here, in 1952, that the West Rand Consolidated Mine was the first in the world to extract Uranium as a by-product of the gold refining process. During the Anglo-Boer War, the British built a concentration camp here to keep Boer women and children captive.
