Old Nelspruit Airfield - early
Nelspruit is 330km east of Johannesburg in Mpumalanga province. The city is situated on the Crocodile River, 100km west of the Mozambique border. Nelspruit is a major stop over for tourists travelling to the Kruger National Park or Mozambique. The city has a population of over 200,000 & was founded in 1905 by three brothers of the Nel family who grazed their cattle here during the winter months.
Fertile soil and a subtropical climate form the ideal conditions for the growing of citrus & tropical fruits such as mango, banana, avocado & Macadamia nuts. Nelspruit thrives on canning citrus fruits, producing paper, manufacturing furniture and milling timber. There are also numerous farms in the area.
