Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape is the third-largest seaport and fifth-largest city in South Africa. It has a subtropical climate with light rain throughout the year. Winters are cool, but mild & summers are warm, but considerably less humid than Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
Port Elizabeth is 770km from Cape Town and faces east across the wide sweep of Algoa Bay. The city was founded in 1820 and is known as PE, Nelson Mandela Bay, "The Friendly City" or "The Windy City". Since then it has grown to around 1 million inhabitants, and become home to South Africa's automotive industry.
Port Elizabeth is a sister city to Jacksonville, Florida and Palm Desert, California in the United States, and is also in a friendship partnership with the Swedish city of Gothenburg.
