Pretoria viewed from Union Bui
Pretoria, in the northern part of the Gauteng province, was founded in 1855 by Mathinus Pretoruis, a leader of the Voortrekkers. Pretoria has many parks and gardens, which soften the monuments and grandiose official buildings (often dating back to the 1800's). The city, approximately 50km north of Johannesburg, lies in a warm, sheltered, and fertile valley protected by the Magaliesberg range.
Pretoria is one of South Africa's 3 capital cities, along with Cape Town and Bloemfontein. Each spring, the flowers of the jacaranda trees add splashes of lilac to the streets of South Africa's administrative capital, which is also one of the country's foremost academic centres.
The city has a population of 1 million and the main languages spoken in the city are Tswana, Afrikaans, Ndebele and English. The mild climate here is much like that of Johannesburg.
