Rustenburg, Afrikaans and Dutch for "town of rest", is situated at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range in the North West province. The town was established in 1851 as an administrative centre for the surrounding farming area producing citrus fruit, tobacco, groundnuts, sunflower seeds, maize, wheat and cattle. Today the city has a population of 395,000.

Rustenburg is reported to be the fastest growing city in South Africa and is home to the two largest platinum mines and the largest platinum refinery in the world, which processes 70% of the world's platinum.
