The small town of Springbok is the capital of the Namaqualand in the Northern Cape. The town is located in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the Klein Koperberge (Small Copper Mountains). The region was an early settlement which gradually turned into a major commercial and administrative centre for copper mining.
The area is famed for the incredible transformation which occurs every spring after the winter rains. At this time of year, the near-lifeless scrubland explodes into colour with thousands of flowers covering the dry dusty earth.
The town was originally called Sprinbokfontein, but the -fontein (fountain) was dropped in later years. The town was founded on the farm Melkboschkuil owned by one Kowie Cloete.
