Stellenbosch in the Western Cape is only 50km east of Cape Town, located along the banks of Eerste River. After Cape Town, it is the oldest European settlement in South Africa and has become known as Eikestad (the City of Oaks) due to the number of oak trees planted here by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1985. This valley in the Cape Winelands is sheltered by the Simonsberg mountain to the south and the Jonkers Hoek and Great Drakenstein mountains to the east & south east. The Tweeling Peaks (Afrikaans for Twin Peaks) are a signature of the Stellenbosch skyline. The town has attracted over 100,000 mostly Afrikaans residents.
Stellenbosch is the heart of the South African wine industry, and the grapes grown in this area are mainly used for wine production (as opposed to table grapes). The Stellenbosch wine route, established in 1971 by the Simonsig, Delheim and Spier estates, is a world renowned tourism experience.
Besides the world-class wine, Stellenbosch is known for the prestigious Stellenbosch University (established in 1863) and its historic architecture. The picturesque streets are lined with homes in the Cape Dutch, Cape Georgian, Regency and Victorian styles. It follows then that this fantastic town is best explored on foot.
Stellenbosch has a Mediterranean climate, with dry and warm to hot summers, which may exceed 30 degrees Celsius. Winters are cool, rainy and sometimes windy, with temperatures in the region of 16 degrees Celsius. Snow is usually only seen on the surrounding peaks during winter.
