Garden Route accommodation.
The Tsitsikamma mountains are located on the south coast of the Garden Route. This mountain range, together with the Outeniqua and Langkloof mountain ranges, extends just over 80km from Keurbooms River and Mossel Bay in the west to the Storms River Mouth and Kareedouw Pass in the east. The region between the range and the ocean also bears the name Tsitsikamma and is characterised by cattle farms, sparse settlements and dense Afromontane Forrest. The region sits on a 200m plateau between the mountains and steep cliffs which drop into the Indian Ocean.
Tsitsikamma means "place of much water” as rainfall exceeds 1 000mm per annum but the range can tolerate this as it consists mostly of Table Mountain sandstone which is particularly erosion-resistant. Peak Formosa is the highest point in the range at 1 675m, and snow can occur on these highest peaks in winter. Other than this, the climate here is mild.
The Tsitsikamma National Park lies just to the south of the range on the Indian Ocean and Bloukrans Bridge at the boundary between the Eastern and Western Cape sports the highest bungee jump in the world.
