Witbank is situated on the Highveld of the Mpumalanga province. The name Witbank (Afrikaans for White Ridge) is named after a white sandstone outcrop where wagon transport drivers rested. The town was established in 1890.
Witbank is the local coal mining area with 22 collieries in an area no more than 40km in any direction. There are a number of power stations as well as steel mills nearby which all require coal.
