Garden Route accommodation. The Cango Caves are a vast network of impressive caves that stretch below the Swartberg Mountains, just outside of Oudtshoorn. Minerals have crystalized in the most spectacular formations inside the cave, forming various stalactites, stalagmites and all sorts of odd shapes in between.
Not all of the caves are open to the public (some are closed for preservation) but tours of the open chambers are popular amongst tourists. The regular tour of the 762m long Cango 1, the 150,000 year old, 9m high Cleopatra's Needle, and the spectacular Frozen Waterfall takes an hour. The option of a full tour is available to fitter tourist who aren't claustrophobic and takes an hour and a half and over 400 stairs.
The opening to the Cango caves was discovered in 1780 by local herdsman, but rock art and tools found inside the cave have revealed that it was inhabited as many as 15,000 years ago. Inside of the caves the temperature is always a mild 18 degrees Celcius, but the humidity sits at 95%.
In addition to attraction guides TravelGround also has a wide selection of
South Africa accommodation. Take a look!
