East London accommodation. The East London Museum is most well know for the role that it played when, in 1938, a fish from a species thought to be extinct since the dinosaurs was caught off the Chalumna River mouth.
The curious fish was taken to the curator of the museum who contacted an expert from Rhodes University in Grahamstown. The professor declared that the blue fish with 6 appendages was a coelacanth of the “Latimeria chalumnae” variety. Despite a reward being offered, the next fish of this variety was only found 14 years later off the Comoros.
