Cape Town accommodation. Greenmarket Square is one of the most popular markets in Cape Town. Built in the 1600s, the square has been used over the centuries as a place to market everything from vegetables to African cultural artifacts. It was even used as slave market. In the 18th century the market was the fruit and vegetable trading hub of the city. It has since played host to many a political protest especially during the time when South Africa was still under apartheid rule.
The square is now a cobbled market aimed at tourists and lined with historical buildings including the Metropolitan Methodist Church and the Old Town House, and is situated very close to the Parliamentary Houses. Greenmarket Square is bustling with activity from Monday to Saturday and filled with make-shift stalls and curios. The Square is the perfect place for creative jewelery, clothing and leather-works, but you may be better served for genuine antiques at the nearby Church Street Antique Market. Be sure to negotiate in the stalls as prices are bound to go up the moment traders recognize a foreign accent.
