Johannesburg accommodation. Soweto's Hector Petersen Museum is a history of 1976 events and the Apartheid police brutality. It is in memory of the tragic events surrounding the student uprising on June 16, 1976. The exhibits in this red brick building track the events preceding the uprising to put it into its appropriate context and includes many original banners and posters protesting Afrikaans education.
The demonstration began as a protest of the use of Afrikaans in townships schools during apartheid, but was taken to another level when the police shot dead a 12-year old boy by the name of Hector Peterson. In total, 566 people died that day, but Hector Peterson was the first to die, and has become a symbol of the tragedy as a whole. The museum is located close to the Hector Peterson memorial, and is only 2 blocks from where he died.
The museum's curator, Ali Hlongwane, tells the heartbreaking tale sincerely, as visitors tour the museums spaces which are linked by a series of ramps.
