Johannesburg accommodation. Formerly known as the infamous John Vorster Square, this was the nerve centre of apartheid repression. The nondescript blue and white building, was the home of the dreaded Security Branch, where many were held, tortured and died while in custody. Renames, it still functions as a police station. Chris van Wyk's poem, 'In detention' ilustrates the absurdity of the official reasons that were given to the media for the death of a detained individual who had been tortured (in theory, police were not allowed to inflict physical or mental brutlity on people).
