Montagu accommodation. This gate is 600km from Johannesburg and provides immediate access to the Northern section of the Kruger National Park. Vegetation here is much more arid than in Southern areas, and many of the rivers have run dry. However, this dry land of mopane trees offers its own charms. The game may be more sparse here but because this section of the park is more remote it is also a more private experience (comparable to that of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park).
Large herds of Buffalo, Elephant roam here and various Antelope are present too. AlthoughThe fact that the region is dry also means that game are more likely to crowd around water-holes in search of a drink.
Because driving over 40kmph is not permitted in the park, a journey from North to South takes in the region of 10hours of driving time. This makes it crucial to plan trip carefully. The gates close at dusk, as driving is not permitted inside the park after dark. For animal safety, driving inside the park is at a snails pace, and injuring an animal is not taken lightly.
