The site is located on the top if a hill which is a very visible beacon, and is the highest point on the Tugela Ridge. The Tugela Ridge is a broken ridge of mountains, bordering the Tugela river on the Northern side. It also forms the Northern ridge of a huge basin stretching from the Maluti mountains to the N3 motorway at Colenso and Estcourt.
