Cape Winelands accommodation. Vergelegen, which means “situated far away”, was granted to Willem Adriaan Van der Stel (the then governor of the Cape) in 1700 and was consequently established as a wine farm.
When making wine, Vergelegen follows the philosophy that “there must be harmony between the old and the new” – a value that has yielded great success in the form of various wine accolades, such as the Best South African Winery for 2004 to 2008, as well as Most Successful Producer for 2002 – 2004 and 2006. Furthermore, the 2006 Vergelegen White obtained five stars from the John Platter Wine Guide.
The estate features a wine museum as well as a tea garden that serves light meals. While Vergelegen is in Somerset West, it strongly takes after many of the wine farms in the Stellenbosch region such as the more developed Spier Estate.
