Welcome to the Voortrekker Museum attraction page - in addition to guides like this post we also list a broad range of hotels, B&B's, guesthouses and self-catering establishments. Please view our Pietermaritzburg page if you're looking for Pietermaritzburg accommodation. The Voortrekker Museum in KwaZulu Natal is a single theme museum with tremendous cultural and historic value. The museum was established in 1912 to commemorates the Voortrekkers, the Battle of Blood river, and the Anglo-Boer War. It is home to relics of the Voortrekkers and specifically records the long history of the parties of Voortrekkers who went on to establish Pietermaritzburg as the capital of what was then known as the 'Republic of Natalia'.

This historic museum in Pietermaritzburg is centered on the Church of the Vow, built after the Battle of Blood River, but the Voortrekker Museum complex has 5 buildings – the main building, The Shiva Indian Temple, The Voortrekker Complex, The Zulu Hut and 333 Boom street. 333 Boom Street deserves a special mention because this structure is considered to be the oldest, standing double-story building in Pietermaritzburg. Legend has it that P G Pretorius, the cousin of Andries Pretorious, the victorious commander in the Battle of Blood River, resided at 333 Boom Street. Today, the building houses exhibitions on the Anglo-Boer war.

In addition to attraction guides TravelGround also has a wide selection of South Africa accommodation. Take a look!
