The Church Square in Worcester hosts a variety of cultural and historical pieces important to Worcester: a stone cairn erected in 1938 to commemorate the Great Trek, the World War I Memorial and the Garden of Remembrance designed by artist Hugo Naude (see: Hugo Naude House).

Church Square: National Monument declared 1974: Like it was envisaged by its founders, Church Square, the hub of the town, was the showcase of its most beautiful buildings. Had these buildings been treasured, Worcester might have been the most notable town in South Africa because of its buildings. Unfortunately its town fathers were not susceptible to the beauty in their midst. Until late June 1974 the destruction of the beautiful buildings around Church Square continued when the last jewels disappeared with the demolition of the town hall….
The Square was made available for church use in 1819. It served as a span for churchgoers. To use the square for other purposes, special permission had to be obtained from the government. However, this requirement was ignored and over the years it was used as show grounds, sports grounds, grazing for cattle and a parade ground for the “Volunteer Rifles”. Early in the 20th century promenade concerts were held on the square, in the 1925 old cannon still stood here and children played on it. A nursery rhyme was also written about the cannon. In 1919 the artist Hugo Nude designed the Garden of Remembrance; the appearance of the square has changed over the years. Originally there were 4 rows of blue gum trees around the plain and the garden was full of plants. The square was declared a National Monument in 1974 to prevent further intrusions and changes.
