Are you tired of all the same boring store-bought Christmas Crackers each year with the usual go-to jokes and useless cheap gifts? Well, why not make your own? That way, you can buy inexpensive gifts for friends and family that you know will be put to good use, as well as handpick the best (of the worst) cracker jokes, or make your own. Here are some great ideas for creating your own unique Christmas Crackers:

You will need:

  • Empty Toilet Rolls (1 per guest)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Pretty wrapping paper in your colour scheme
  • Colourful ribbons
  • Decorations, glitter, sequins, name tags, etc
  • Cracker Snaps (available from Merrypak)
  • Cheap Gifts
  • Christmas Hats (optional)
  • Christmas Jokes or “Table Talks” (optional)

When picking cracker fillers, try to choose gifts that will suit each guest, and that can fit inside a generic toilet roll. If you don’t know each guest personally or are finding it difficult to pick for someone, default items such as sweets, chocolates, and biltong are great ideas for any age.

Homemade Christmas Crackers

Cut the wrapping paper into a rectangle so that it will fit two toilet rolls side by side. Next, position the toilet roll in the middle of the rectangle paper (leaving equal space on either side of the roll). Wrap the paper around the roll and glue closed. Insert the Cracker Snap into the middle of the roll and ensure that it does not stick out of either end. Cut a second toilet roll in half, and insert into each end of the cracker to keep the round shape. Next, twist one end of the cracker inwards and fasten with a ribbon. Insert gifts, jokes, and Christmas hats into the open side. Twist and fasten the second side with another piece of ribbon. Remove the halved toilet rolls. Add place names and decorate as you please.
