We like to think of ourselves as savvy travellers. Who easily sniff out the discounts and deals and choose entertainments and attractions that interest us when on holiday. With each year revealing new trends and interests in the travel market, it’s time for all frequent travellers, continent hoppers, and avid explorers to brush up on the rising travel trends of 2015.

1. Self-sufficient stays are on the rise

As Eskom power cuts have been scheduled for the next few years across South Africa, your travel plans are very likely to be disrupted with an unforeseen black out. While it’s easy enough to hop in the car and drive to a generator-powered restaurant in the city, it’s far harder to get away when you’re in the middle of the country or bush. At a self-sufficient accommodation however, electricity won’t be much of a concern as gas and solar power will take care of all your modern heating, cooling, and cooking needs. Find out about our favourite off the grid stays, eco-friendly places, and Africa’s top green hotel.

In the name of ease and convenience, more travellers are shunning checked baggage when flying locally. Make things easier for yourself by packing what you need into a carry-on bag and you’ll be able to leave the airport without having to wait at a luggage carousel. Check out the TravelGround Pinterest page for tips on what to pack in a carry-on bag.

3. Boost in culinary and food tourism

In 2015, travellers are more interested in an in depth experience encompassing culture, sightseeing, and activities while focusing on sustainability. There’s no better way to get to know a place and its people then by immersing yourself in a culinary tour. Try out artisan foods, farm fresh ingredients, fair-trade produce, craft beers, and biodynamic wines, while supporting local business’ and community upliftment projects. Learn to cook traditional Karoo cuisine, go on a Cape Malay cooking safari, eat at a farm to fork restaurant, and support the locals at foodie markets.

4. Walking tours and experiential travel gaining popularity

With health conscious travellers opting to use foot powered transport over gas guzzling vehicles, the rise of walking and cycling tours in cities will increase. We love the VoiceMap audio walking tours app that has tours available in Cape Town, China, Washington, and Europe. If you’re road tripping around the country, smaller towns like Clarens have unique draws such as their art meander,  while wildlife viewing at safari lodges and national parks, and self-drives along the Midlands Meander route all promises beautiful views and plenty of family fun.

Visitors in 2015 are likely to spend time outdoors appreciating nature and booking stays away from the city to truly unwind from the daily grind. Picnicking around South Africa, secluded forest stays, visits to botanical gardens, wildflower viewing, and exploring the Northern Cape are all great ways to reconnect with the scenery and splendour of South Africa.
