Tucked away down a Stellenbosch country lane is WedgeView Country House and Spa, a 5-star rated property with a beautiful garden and luxurious, yet homey, ambience.

WedgeView Garden arrival (C) Roseanna McBain

After arriving and admiring the beautiful 3-acre garden that comes complete with rose bushes, lavender bushes, succulents, local trees, and lovely wrought iron statues, we were warmly welcomed by Sonja. The French Intern Student chatted merrily as she led us on a whirlwind tour of the property.

WedgeView Honesty Bar (C) Roseanna McBain

She proudly pointed out unique features such as their in-house spa, two lavish lounges, indigenous flower blooms, and the very well-stocked honesty bar, which included a selection of Zonneweelde wines. WedgeView Country House just so happens to be the only South African supplier of this international exclusive brand.

Sipping on a glass of the exclusive Zonneweelde chardonnay (delicious!), my partner and I were left in the lapa, to enjoy the fading rays of sunlight over the vineyard, before retiring to our Garden Deluxe Room.

And what a room it was! The beautiful free-flow design and lovely little touches made us feel at home at once, from the lilac orchid on the entry table and personalized note, to the enormous king-sized bed and dresser adorned with snacks and a bottle of Zonneweelde wine.

We marvelled at the open-plan room, and I’m not ashamed to say I squealed in delight at the sight of the giant slipper bath in the alcove, and the soft towelling gowns. A bath was naturally in order, and I can safely say that the slipper bath fits 2 people quite comfortably. If you want to up the romance factor, I’d suggest bringing along some bubble bath or bath salts. The television was perfectly positioned to view it from the bath and the bed, so keeping up with your favourite series or the news, is possible. The indulgent linens, air-conditioning set on heat, and soft lighting, made the room a cosy little retreat from the chilly outdoors. You could easily spend a very happy week in the room, perfectly comfortable and catered for with ample cupboard and draw space, a bar fridge pre-stocked with chocolates, sodas, and beer, and a writing desk with multiple power sockets. There’s even an alarm clock for those who struggle to rise with the sun.

Sunrise walk (C) Roseanna McBain

Awaking early on Saturday morning, I was greeted with soft dawn light filtering through the trees, and as I took a quick tour of the property before anyone else was up, Hadadas, an Egyptian goose, and several local birds kept me company as I walked across the lavender scented lawn. Having this gorgeous place all to myself, for a quiet hour before breakfast, was heavenly!

Breakfast buffet (C) Roseanna McBain

Joining the other guests coming in dribs and drabs, I collected my partner and we headed to the lavish breakfast buffet. Creamy yoghurts, mueslis, a cheese and meat selection, freshly baked croissants, farm breads, and cereals, all appealed to my rumbling tummy. After making my choice, which included a croissant and blueberry jam, we enjoyed dining al fresco with some aromatic coffee, before a menu was proffered for us to select our hot breakfast.

After our eggs, bacon, mushrooms, sausage, toast, and juice, we did a quick tour of the spa to see the therapy rooms, expansive sauna and steam room, gym, and a hydrobath room. As much as I wanted to stay and soak in the homey sophistication that characterises WedgeView, it was time to head out and explore Stellenbosch and the Oude Libertas Slow Food Market.

With rates starting from R645 per person in winter, WedgeView Country House and Spa is an incredibly affordable luxury stay in the winelands, and perfect for couples seeking romance. I will definitely dream of the amazing bath, breakfast, and that rare, serene hour spent in the garden with only local birds for companionship.
