Betty’s Bay is a quaint holiday town situated only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, on the Overberg coast of the Western Cape. Situated beneath the rugged Kogelberg Mountains, between Pringle Bay and Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay offers an array of exciting activities that are not to be missed. Betty’s Bay features some of the most captivating scenery in the country, surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges and the glistening ocean. It is named after Betty Youlden, who was the daughter of the first developer of the area. Betty’s Bay is one of the four towns that make up the Hangklip-Kleinmond area, which is referred to as the place “where the whales play and wildflowers bloom”.

There is a wide variety of accommodation available in Betty’s Bay. The selection of establishments range from fully equipped self-catering accommodations to cosy guesthouses, and B&Bs. Betty's Bay contains a variety of worthwhile attractions not to be missed. The famous Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, which stretches from the mountaintop down towards the sea, is known as “little Kirstenbosch” and boasts some of the best examples of local fynbos, including protea’s, restios, and over 50 ericas. Stony Point features the remains of a whaling station and offers excellent land-based whale watching opportunities. It also boasts one of only four mainland Jackass Penguin colonies in the country, which has been declared a municipal nature reserve.

Betty’s Bay holds claim to the 100,000 hectare Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which is the first UNESCO declared biosphere in South Africa. It is often referred to as being the “heart of the fynbos kingdom”. Over 1600 different plant species can be seen when hiking through the mountains here. Permits can be obtained at the Oudebosch Office in the reserve.

Other activities to be enjoyed in Betty’s Bay include sand boarding down the Silversands dune, surfing, angling, white water rafting, canoeing on the Palmiet River, and mountain biking through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Outdoor enthusiasts in Betty's Bay will relish hiking the Leopard's Gorge Trail, the Palmiet River trail, or up to the Disakloof waterfall in the botanical gardens. While you’re in Betty’s Bay, be sure to tick off a game of golf at Arabella Golf Course, an adventure race with Jackazz Eco-Adventures, a visit to the Art Route Gallery, and be sure to keep an eye out for whales along the Betty’s Bay coast between May and December.

Betty’s Bay is renowned for its lovely beaches. Silver Sands and Hangklip dunes lie to the west of Stony Point offering a beach stretching over 4km with great kite surfing opportunities. The beach is also good for romantic picnics, swimming, and surfing, while Jock’s Bay and Shelly Beach near Betty’s Bay offer fantastic paddling and shell collecting opportunities.
