The town of Boksburg was founded in 1887, after gold was discovered in the area, in order to serve surrounding mining towns. It was named after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. The Main Reef Road linked Boksburg to other major mining towns on the Witwatersrand and the Angelo Hotel was used as a staging post. The town has since become one of the most important gold-producing towns on the Witwatersrand.
