Madikwe Game Reserve

Description

Madikwe Game Reserve is a malaria-free Big Five reserve in the North West province. Known for its thriving population of African wild dogs, Madikwe is the fifth largest game park in South Africa and one of the best conservation areas in Africa. With its wide selection of accommodation and remote location on the border of Botswana, visitors can enjoy an authentic and uncrowded safari experience.

Madikwe Game Reserve is only 3 and a half hours from Johannesburg, making it an ideal getaway for visitors seeking an escape from the concrete jungle. It is close to the Kalahari Desert, which is a haven for nature lovers and wildlife photographers. The reserve is home to 300 species of bird and 66 types of large mammals, including the Big Five. But Madikwe is better known for its rare opportunities to spot the highly endangered African wild dog. Despite the challenges of introducing the African wild dogs to the park, there is now a thriving population of 3 hunting packs.

None of the animals migrate, so game viewing is good throughout the year across the vast open grasslands, Woodlands, and rocky outcrops. That being said, the dry winter months are favourable as the vegetation thins out and the animals concentrate in larger numbers around the fewer waterholes.

Entrance Rates: - R150 for adults - R60 for children and pensioners
