Sutherland is the coldest place in South Africa, so for those who have not experienced snow, it is a good place to go at certain times during the winter. For Europeans or those who take part in winter sports, the snow is not such a draw. The stargazing is excellent and visit to the observatory, which must be booked, is highly informative and interesting. There is one very good and some good restaurants and the people are friendly and welcoming. It is a bit out of the way, so a stay for more than a couple of nights will leave you at a loose end, but it is certainly a destination worth visiting.
