6B Sugar Beach
- 27-29 North Beach Road, Umdloti, 4350, KwaZulu-Natal
Umdloti is a charming seaside village hemmed between lush green sugar cane fields and the endless Indian Ocean. It is situated on the Dolphin Coast between Umhlanga and Ballito, approximately 20 kilometres north of Durban, home to the busiest harbour in Africa. With the new King Shaka International Airport just over the hill, Umdloti is an ideal stopover for visitors and business travellers arriving or departing KwaZulu-Natal.
This beautiful section of sandy beach has a shallow intertidal zone where the low tides form a myriad of rocky inshore pools. The coastal waters are rich in marine life providing endless shore fishing opportunities and great offshore ski boat and paddle ski fishing.
Umdloti beaches are very user friendly and the swimming areas are patrolled by lifeguards and protected with shark nets. The first whales are normally sighted in late June along with the sardines and the dolphins are local residents so the sea is a constant carnival of activity. The unique Umdloti Tidal Pool system forms a beautiful safe inshore bay for swimming and snorkelling. And of course Umdloti is renowned for excellent surfing.
The Umdloti River mouth opens to the sea when the rains come and in between forms a wide deep lagoon ideal for stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and kitesurfing. The estuary is lined with mangrove forest, which is home to an abundance of water fowl and resident Fish Eagles, making it a bird watchers paradise.
