An enjoyable stop over.

We had a lovely mutton curry supper and a superb evening chatting with Dee Dee. I think our Airedale terrier enjoyed the stay more than we did.

Have a nice visit.

We arrived in the early afternoon, Dee Dee met us, filled us in on what we needed to know, and we spent the afternoon relaxing and reading in a lovely space. Dinner is best described as a "lekker kuier", the food was delicious and the company engaging. We will be back.

Vriendelike diens, skoon akkommodasie en uitstekende kos.

Ons is vriendelik ontvang en het oornag in 'n netjiese, skoon kamer. Die eienares was uiters behulpsaam en het ons bederf met uitstekende aandete en ontbyt. Voorwaar 'n plekkie wat aanbeveel kan word.

The perfect half-way stop between Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape.

Dee Dee is very hospitable and friendly, but not intrusive. She made contact before our stay (both ways) to confirm our stay and check on food requirements. She was extremely accommodating when I changed arrangements at the last minute. New Year's Eve dinner was poor - but the take-away breakfast the next morning, (to ensure we got away early, at our request) was lovely! The three-course meal on our return was really good, and so was breakfast the next morning. The room is spacious, clean, and well-appointed.

Comfortable and quiet, with a charming garden and good food on a lovely terrace.

Altogether a very pleasant stay, we hope to visit Black Cottage again on our next visit.

A pleasant and enjoyable stay.

The cottage was comfortable and clean. The hostess was kind and caring and cooked a great 3-course dinner and breakfast for us.

We can recommend Black Cottage as a stopover or a place to stay if you visit family or friends in the area. We had lovely conversations with the "hostess with the mostest" who has a lovely garden that can sustain a lot of her catering needs.

DeeDee se gasvryheid was 'n groot seën - die aand wat ons by haar oornag het was ons 54ste huweliksherdenking wat sy vir ons spesiaal gemaak het met 'n heerlike aandete op kort kennisgewing - daai brownies was hemels! Baie dankie DeeDee!

Dee Dee is 'n 5-ster gasvrou.

Ons het 'n aangename tyd gehad vir 'n paar dae vir werk in die area. Dee Dee het heerlike kos gemaak, en 'n mens kan versoek om te braai ook. Die personeel is baie vriendelik en tegemoetkomend. Beveel dit definitief aan vir enige tipe reisiger.

'n Heerlikheid!

'n Juweel in die vir-ons-onbekende dorpie Smithfield. Lieflike kamer, voortreflike uit-die-boeke-etes, perfekte gasvrou, en heerlike saamgesels en -lag. Dit het soos 'n ekstra stukkie vakansie gevoel, nie net 'n oorslaap op pad huis toe nie. Ons sal beslis weer kom, Dee Dee.

DeeDee was a wonderful host. She was welcoming, the accommodation was comfortable and the meals, delicious.

DeeDee kept in contact with us during our trips via WhatsApp so we could inform her of any changes to our arrival times on our trips to/from the Eastern Cape. The accommodation was spotless. We arranged to have dinner and breakfast and the meals were delicious and took any food allergy/sensitivities into account. We felt very at home.

The attention to detail is apparent. The most comfortable bed I have ever slept in at a guesthouse. The food was divine, hostess super friendly and accommodating! Highly recommend!

Dee Dee is a fantastic host. Great food, very accommodating as far as our pets were concerned.

Dit is 'n goeie waarde vir geld 3-stergastehuis met 5-ster-eienaar wat 5-ster-etes bedien. Die gastehuis is op rand van dorp en glo maar jou Google Maps as hy jou op klein grondpaadjies na die adres lei.

Was 'n aangename ondervinding. Goeie waarde vir geld. Eienaar het ook baie inskiklik ons besprekings aangepas toe ek Covid opgedoen het.

What a lovely place, DeeDee is charming and her food is top notch! The best meal we had all holiday.

Our stay was an absolute delight - our two pets were as happy as we were - 5 stars all around.

It was such a delight to come across a cute little room that was very spacious - very secure - we had two pets and the host was very accommodating and her hosptality in every way was delightful as well - conversation, food and accommodation - top notch - lovely little spot in Smithfield.

Memorable overnight stay.

We really enjoyed our stay, albeit for one night. From the moment we arrived Dee Dee, the owner and chef, made us feel welcome and went out of her way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. Black Cottage is filled with artworks and a library with books that is worth browsing. The room with en-suite shower had all the facilities we needed and was spotless. Well worth the diversion.

One of the best surprises of my travels.

Dee Dee is delightful. Her place is artistic, simple, and stylish with some beautiful quality touches. The bed was perfect, comfortable mattress, lovely linens, with everything one needs. The highlight of the visit was her fine dining and interesting conversation. Dee Dee is a gem. She has two warm friendly dogs that make you feel quite at home. I am certain I will be making this a regular stop on my trips between Joburg and East London.

Lovely place to stay. The room was clean and very comfortable. The hostess was very gracious and nothing was too much trouble.
