Island Vibe - The Harbour Masters House is an elegant house perched above Fort Frederick with lovely views of the Port Elizabeth harbour. Built in the typical Victorian style, the house displays features of cut glass windows, pressed ceilings with glamorous chandeliers and fireplaces in most of the rooms.
The bedrooms are located upstairs and display a modern feel. The wraparound balcony on both levels offers views over the harbour and bay. The communal areas downstairs are spacious with comfy armchairs and bright colours, creating a relaxed atmosphere where guests can unwind.
Meals are served in the dining room, which boasts 2 fireplaces and a long table seating 24. Whether the establishment is hosting an in-period dress up dinner or a more casual communal meal, guests are bound to meet interesting travellers with many an intriguing tale.
Known as the Harbour Master’s House, it was built in 1901 by the wealthy merchant Mr William John Messina, who all but owned the harbour and its industry. The Harbour Master’s House has been restored to former glory and sports a trendy style.
Situated at Fort Frederick, it is conveniently located on Route 67, a commemorative walking route focusing on the 67 years of work Nelson Mandela committed to the freedom of South Africa. It displays works of art and heritage as well as taking in the city’s historical sites.
