Description

Dorp Street is a quaint oak lined street in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. As one of the longest rows of old buildings surviving in any major town in southern Africa, it oozes with an old world charm. Take a stroll down the street and admire the beautiful Cape Dutch architecture, restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops; one of the best historic walking areas in the town with plenty to see and do.

The architecture is best viewed towards the western end where there is little commercial development and is a lot quieter. Most of the buildings date back to the 19th century. Stop off at No 166 Voorgelegen which contains some of the original Batavian tiles in the parlour, Alos in Dorp Street, and the old Lutheran Church (1851), used as an art gallery.

There are also plenty of boutique shops with various trinkets and African curios. Don’t forget to check out Oom Samie se Winkel which has a mixture of antiques and souvenirs. Restaurants include the Dorp Street Deli, The Big Easy, The Trumpet Tree Social Café, Cognito Restaurant, Casparus Restaurant, Gino’s, and Jan Cats Restaurant.
