Eagle Encounters is a self-funded non-profit organisation that runs a bird of prey rehabilitation centre at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. Visitors to the centre can expect “the ultimate wildlife experience†as they enjoy viewing and getting to know the birds and the variety of animals at the centre.
Eagle Encounters offers 4 unique and interactive falconry flying shows daily, as well as personal encounters and private viewings. The birds are not kept in cages but instead in a “weathering area†where you can openly view and photograph these awesome birds. Spend the day with Woody the adorable Wood Owl, the pair of dancing Barn Owls, or view the Spotted Eagle Owls in the front enclosure. At 11h00, you can observe and participate in various falconry techniques to train the raptors. Depending on the day, you may see eagles, vultures, falcons, hawks, buzzards, kites, or owls being put through their paces. At 14h00, an interactive falconry show is held where you may spectate and participate in a flying show with various birds. At 15h00, the Secretary Bird’s Snake Hunt is held where you can see the powerful kick of this magnificent bird. At 16h00, you can view the “Built for the Kill†show with raptor species displaying their distinctive natural talents.
In addition to the birds, the centre also has other wildlife, such as porcupine, snakes, lizards, rabbits, a bearded dragon, dwarf rabbits, Cape dwarf chameleons, and more! Don’t forget to come and meet Sonic, the African Porcupine, who was orphaned and grew up in the Chalmers household. You can interact with this adorable little creature as well as feed him during your time at the centre.
Eagle Encounters is great for kids’ parties, school groups, weddings, and corporate functions!
