Pridwin Preparatory School

Contact Details

Pridwin Preparatory School is an independent, non-denominational day school for boys in Melrose, Johannesburg. It has Christian values and caters for over 344 boys from Grade 0 to Grade 7. The school is owned by the Pridwin Foundation; a non-profit organisation controlled by a board of directors and is a member of the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA). Pridwin is strongly associated with its neighbouring school, St Vincent’s School for the Deaf with which it shares facilities.

Pridwin Preparatory School was founded in 1923 in Winkelspruit, KwaZulu-Natal, by Captain and Mrs Claude Janion with just 6 students. Captain Janion served in the East Surrey Regiment during the First World War and won the DSO at the Battle of Somme. He chose the colours of his regiment for the Pridwin school tie. The school was named after King Arthur’s ship Pridwyn. In 1934, the school relocated to its current site in Gauteng.

The school motto is Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit which means “Out Of Nothing, Nothing Comes”.
